16-13

The Royals have won at least 16 of their first 29 games 11 times in team history, and only once, that infamous 2009 season, have they finished below .500. Oddly enough, 4 of the 6 times they started 15-14 resulted in losing records, so last night's win keeps this season ever so slightly on the magical side.

2009 is what we keep hearing about so I've been waiting to see how some of their numbers compare after 29 games.

Year/Record HR SB AVG/OBP/SLG RPG ERA WHIP SO/9 RAPG
2009 18-11 29 15 .265/.346/.437 4.9 3.53 1.303 7.8 3.8
2011 16-13 25 35 .273/.339/.433 5.2 4.48 1.466 6.0 4.9

Offensively it looks close but really isn't and the pitching was of course better 2 years ago. Zack Greinke was in the midst of his Cy Young season and Trey Hillman hadn't yet begin his unholy assault on Gil Meche's right arm.

They were wildly inconsistent on offense in 2009. Their team OPS didn't rise over .700 until their 10th game and after 18 games was at .714. After 29 games it was at .782, thanks to an 11 game offensive outburst (.885 OPS 6.5 RPG) that guided them to that 18-11 record. It was, of course, all downhill from there.

This year their OPS has, for the most part, been in the .740-.780 range. It's at .772 right now and I expect that will drop as the season wears on, especially if Chris Getz keeps playing everyday and Alcides Escobar continues his 1972 Freddie Patek impersonation.

Regardless what happens from here on out, they are infinitely more interesting than the 2009 Royals.

Heh, well I think it'd be an accomplishment for Escobar and Getz to hit worse than they are right now, so any struggles at the plate they contribute probably won't worsen the team's OPS. That damage is most likely to come from Francoeur's seemingly inevitable drop-off.

Strange that I have tons more confidence in Betemit's results than Frenchy's, though, because Betemit also hasn't proven he can hit well for more than about 1/2 a season's worth of PA's. But his approach is just so much more sound than Francoeur's, I think that gives me confidence in him.

Yeah I agree. I think Betemit's approach is more sound so it's not hard to imagine his numbers being sustainable. I don't know what going with Kila, in regards to his playing time, but I'd prefer him to Getz in the lineup.
