So now the infield of the future that we all dreamed about in spring training is the infield of the present - Hosmer at 1st base, Giavotella at 2nd base, Escobar at shortstop and Moustakas at 3rd base. Giavotella hit .339/.391/.481 for Omaha with 44 extra base hits. To put that into proper context, Getz has 41 extra base hits for his entire big league career (1061 PAs).
I suspect that Giavotella will have a shorter leash than Moustakas so if he struggles, and I mean really struggles, he'll find himself in a platoon situation with Getz. That would be unfortunate.
The only annoyance I have with the move is it appears Yamaico Navarro will be the one demoted instead of say Everett Teaford or, dare I dream, Getz. Navarro is a true utility infielder and looks to have a playable bat, something Getz of course lacks. Getz also lacks the ability to play shortstop and 3rd base so the Royals are in the same position they were in earlier this year when Wilson Betemit was the utility infielder.
In the grand scheme of things it's not really a big deal who is backing up the infielders because Hosmer/Giavotella/Escobar/Moustakas should play everyday. "Should" being the operative word there.
